What is High-Intensity Support
Overview
High-intensity support refers to specialised assistance provided to people with disability who have complex, higher-level support needs — needs that require a support worker with advanced training and skills beyond standard personal care.
What High-Intensity Support May Include
- Assistance with complex bowel care or catheter management
- Support for people who use ventilators or other respiratory equipment
- Enteral feeding (tube feeding) management and assistance
- Tracheostomy care and airway management support
- Subcutaneous injections and medication administration
- Support for people with complex behaviour or mental health needs who require a higher level of specialist involvement
How High-Intensity Support Helps
High-intensity support ensures that people with complex medical or personal care needs can live as independently and safely as possible, without having to rely solely on hospital or clinical settings. It brings qualified, skilled support directly into a person’s everyday life — whether at home, in the community, or at a day program. This allows participants to maintain their routines, dignity, and quality of life while having their needs safely met.
How It Connects to Support Services
High-intensity support doesn’t exist in isolation — it often works alongside other services a person receives, such as allied health therapy, in-home support, or community participation programs. A support coordinator can play an important role in helping a participant identify providers who are qualified to deliver high-intensity supports and making sure all services work together smoothly. At Angels on Wheels, our team understands how to deliver and coordinate these supports safely and with care.
