Starting 19 May 2025, the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) will introduce new funding periods to all new and reassessed NDIS plans. While this change will be rolled out gradually, it’s important that participants, families, support coordinators, and providers understand what it means and how to prepare.
At Angels on Wheels, we’re committed to helping participants in Sydney and across NSW navigate these updates with ease and confidence.
What Are NDIS Funding Periods?
A funding period is the timeframe during which part of a participant’s total NDIS funding becomes available. Instead of receiving all funds upfront, plans will release funding in scheduled intervals—such as every 3 months or monthly—depending on the type of support.
These changes don’t affect the total funding in a participant’s plan—only when the funding is made available.
Key Changes from 19 May 2025
- New and reassessed plans will include funding periods (usually 3 months).
- Participants will only be able to claim funding currently available within that period.
- Unused funds roll over to the next funding period within the same plan—but not into a new plan.
- No impact for existing plans until they’re reviewed or renewed.
The aim is to give participants more flexibility, reduce the risk of overspending, and provide better protection against misuse or fraud.
Special Considerations
- Large upfront costs like assistive technology or home modifications may have higher initial funding allocations.
- Supported Independent Living (SIL) and other regular, high-cost supports will follow monthly funding periods to better match service delivery.
This approach ensures funds are distributed more evenly, making it easier for participants to plan and track their spending.
Feedback and Consultation
Since March 2024, the NDIA has consulted with participants, carers, the Independent Advisory Council, and co-design working groups. Feedback showed strong support for funding periods, especially for longer plans, large budgets, and self-managed participants.
What Support Coordinators Need to Know
Support Coordinators should:
- Help participants create support schedules aligned with funding periods.
- Consider funding intervals when arranging service agreements.
- Plan early to ensure participants access all supports throughout their plan duration.
What Plan Managers Need to Do
Plan Managers must:
- Validate claims to ensure they match NDIS-approved supports and current funding.
- Monitor spending and flag risks of overspending.
- Provide monthly reports showing usage, remaining funds, and any concerns.
Important: Providers must submit claims promptly. Claims can be made for services in earlier funding periods if those funds are still available.
