The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is designed to support Australians with disabilities, but eligibility is influenced by factors such as age. Understanding the age limits for NDIS funding in New South Wales (NSW) is crucial for individuals and families looking to access support.

NDIS Age Requirements

To qualify for NDIS funding, applicants must meet the following age criteria:

1. Children Under 7 (Early Childhood Approach)

The NDIS provides support for children under the age of 7 through the Early Childhood Approach. This initiative focuses on early intervention to improve developmental outcomes. Eligible children receive support such as:

  • Speech therapy
  • Occupational therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Developmental support

Children who require long-term support may transition to an NDIS plan as they grow older.

2. Ages 7 to 65 (NDIS Eligibility)

The core age group eligible for standard NDIS plans includes individuals aged 7 to 65 years. People within this age range who have a permanent and significant disability can access a range of supports, including:

  • Assistive technology
  • Personal care and support
  • Therapeutic services
  • Housing and transport assistance

Participants remain eligible for funding as long as they continue to meet NDIS criteria and require support.

3. Over 65 Years (Alternative Support Options)

Individuals over 65 are not eligible to apply for NDIS funding. However, those who were already receiving NDIS support before turning 65 can choose to either:

  • Continue with their existing NDIS plan
  • Transition to the My Aged Care system, which offers aged care support

For older Australians who develop a disability after 65, the aged care system provides services such as home care, residential aged care, and other forms of assistance.

Individuals aged 65 and over who transition to My Aged Care or exit the NDIS will not be able to rejoin the NDIS in the future.

What If You’re Not Eligible?

If you or a loved one do not meet the age requirements for NDIS funding, other government support programs may be available, including:

  • My Aged Care
  • Medicare-funded therapies
  • State-based disability support services

These services can help ensure continued support for individuals who do not qualify for NDIS funding.
