A Support Coordinator plays a vital role in helping NDIS participants understand and implement their plan. While they provide valuable guidance and connect participants with the right services, there are clear boundaries to their responsibilities. Knowing what a Support Coordinator should not do is just as important as knowing what they can do—especially to ensure ethical, transparent, and participant-centred support.
What Is the Role of a Support Coordinator?
Under the NDIS, a Support Coordinator helps participants:
- Understand their NDIS plan
- Connect with appropriate service providers
- Build capacity to manage and coordinate supports independently
- Monitor progress and prepare for plan reviews
But they are not case managers or financial managers. Their role is to empower—not take over—a participant’s choice and control.
What a Support Coordinator Should Not Do
- Make decisions on behalf of the participant
Support Coordinators must not make service or funding decisions without the participant’s knowledge or consent. - Handle or manage NDIS funds directly
They are not plan managers and must not make payments or authorise claims from a participant’s budget. - Provide direct support services themselves
To avoid conflicts of interest, coordinators should not also act as service providers unless clearly separated by structure and compliance. - Pressure participants into choosing certain providers
Participants must always have choice and control in who delivers their supports. Coordinators should present unbiased options. - Ignore participant goals or act outside their plan
All support must align with the participant’s approved NDIS goals and plan scope. - Overstep privacy or confidentiality boundaries
All personal information should be treated with respect and only shared when appropriate and with consent.
What Makes a Good Support Coordinator?
A great Support Coordinator helps participants feel empowered, informed, and in control. They act as a guide—not a gatekeeper—and work collaboratively with families, providers, and communities to ensure supports align with a participant’s goals.
