Managing your NDIS plan well is the key to making sure you get the most out of your supports. A recent change to the way funding is managed means participants now need to be more aware of how and when their funding is available.

If your plan was approved on or after 9 October 2024, your budget will now include funding periods, a new way of allocating your supports across your plan. Here’s what that means for you.

What Are Funding Periods?

Funding periods tell you when a portion of your funding becomes available and how long it’s meant to last. They help ensure your budget is spread evenly over your plan’s duration, rather than being used up too quickly.

Along with funding periods, your plan will also include:

  • Funding component amounts – Specific funding for certain supports or a group of supports that are considered reasonable and necessary.

Why Is This Important?

In the past, some plans may have been topped up if funding ran out early. This is no longer possible. By law, the NDIA can now only pay for supports that are:

  • Approved in your plan
  • Within the set funding component amounts
  • Within the allocated funding periods

If you go over your total funding amount, the component amount, or the funding period, your claims will not be paid.

What Happens If Funding Runs Out in a Period?

If the budget for that period is used up, no more payments can be made for that time — even if you are still receiving supports. This is why careful budgeting and tracking are more important than ever.

How to Avoid Overspending Your NDIS Budget

  • Know your funding periods – Check your plan to see when each portion of your budget becomes available.
  • Track your spending – Keep an eye on your invoices and claims so you know how much is left for each period.
  • Work with your Support Coordinator – They can help you plan services to make your funding last the entire period.
  • Review regularly – Check your usage monthly to avoid surprises.
