What is a Behaviour Support Plan

Overview

A Behaviour Support Plan is a structured approach used to understand and respond to behaviours of concern in a safe and positive way. The goal is to improve quality of life while supporting safety, communication and emotional regulation.

Understanding behaviours of concern

Behaviours of concern are usually a response to an unmet need, frustration, sensory overload or communication difficulty. A Behaviour Support Plan helps identify what may be causing these behaviours and what supports can help reduce stress and escalation.

What a Behaviour Support Plan may include

  • Triggers that may lead to behaviour
  • Strategies to reduce stress
  • Communication supports
  • Routine adjustments
  • Support worker guidance
  • Environmental changes
  • Safety planning where required

Who develops the plan

Behaviour Support Plans are usually developed by a specialist behaviour support practitioner who works with the participant, family and support team.

Putting support into action

Support coordination can help connect participants with behaviour practitioners and ensure strategies are implemented consistently in everyday supports.
