Respite care is a valuable support option for both NDIS participants and their families or carers. It provides a short-term break from daily routines while ensuring participants receive safe, quality care in a supportive environment.

What Is Respite in the NDIS?

In the NDIS, respite is generally referred to as Short-Term Accommodation and Assistance. This allows participants to stay somewhere else for a short period, giving their informal supports—like family or carers—a break.

STA may also give participants the opportunity to:

  • Build independence away from home
  • Develop daily living skills
  • Socialise and engage in the community
  • Experience new routines in a safe setting

How Is Respite Funded?

Respite is under the NDIS support category Core Supports – Assistance with Daily Life. Plans may include up to 28 days of Short-Term Accommodation per year, which can be used flexibly (e.g. one weekend per month or a week at a time).

What’s Included in STA?

Respite typically covers:

  • Accommodation in a safe, accessible setting
  • 24/7 personal care and support
  • Meals, transport, and community access
  • Activities tailored to the participant’s goals

Who Is Eligible?

Eligibility for respite care depends on individual needs and what’s included in your NDIS plan. A Support Coordinator or LAC can help determine if STA is reasonable and necessary for your situation.
